Beyond Capture: Making a Winning Image
Presented by: Sharon Prislipsky, APSA, EPSA, AFIA

A winning image is not always one that wins a competition. It may be one that has appeal to consumers or one that is worthy of being displayed in your home. Regardless of the definition we choose, all winning images have impact. This program will define impact and discuss how to create images that make a connection with the viewer, evoke an emotion, illustrate a concept or new idea, or perhaps show something new to the viewer. From composing our images to enhancing them in post processing, we can share our vision and communicate with our audience. Finally, we will explore the stages we experience in our photographic journey and how we can take our photography to the next level.

President's Message by Dawn Dingee

For our October Meeting, we had a presentation by Bert Sirkin on how to keep our photography fresh. I hope you were able to get some fresh ideas from his presentation; I know I did. After the meeting, I emailed the slides from the presentation. Please contact me if you did not get them. For November’s meeting, you will receive a Yogile link which in your email which will provide instructions on how to submit your images to be constructively critiqued by a professional photographer and to learn how to make your images more powerful (up to 2 images ea.). This will be a Zoom meeting.
The collection of photos for the first round of the NECCC competition has been completed and photos have been submitted. Thank you for all who participated and/or voted. We are now collecting photos for the PSA fall competition. We are participating in the Color and Black and White category this year. Please send photos to Lazlo, appropriately sized and with your name and title in the filename.
The UCC salon show wrapped up this past week. Our next show is at Noble Horizons in January. The request is for ‘fresh’ photos that haven’t been used in other shows….at Noble or elsewhere so please keep this in mind. Additional details will be sent as we get closer to the date.
Fall colors can still be found but not for long. Hopefully you can get out and shoot before the last of the fall foliage is gone. If you know of any photo opportunities such as fall festivals, holiday lights, etc., please send the information to myself or Lazlo and we will share with the club.

Heraklion, Greece by Dawn Dingee

Heraklion is the 4th largest city in Greece and is the principal port of the Greek island of Crete. We visited this city on our 8th day of our cruise through the Grecian islands and Turkey. At this point in our cruise, I had fallen ill and I debated whether I would even leave the ship. Finally, at around 4pm, I decided to take a walk and thankfully, there was a lot to see without having to wander too far from the port. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the high 70s.

Turkish rule in the city ended in 1897 when it became part of Greece. During the 1941 German airborne invasion of Crete in WWII, the city suffered heavy damage from bombings. The Venetian Walls of Heraklion are a series of defensive walls surrounding the town of Heraklion. They are considered one of the most advanced and well-preserved defensive systems in the entire Mediterranean region. Parts of the wall were damaged from the bombings but they were repaired quickly.

Inside the walls is a maze of streets, alley and squares filled with amazing architecture. We wandered the streets and alleys and came upon a small shop selling hand-made jewelry. After some x-mas shopping and a nice chat with the lovely owner, we returned back to the ship.
